Questions you should ask before building a Granny Flat

Ensuring that it is built to stand the test of time depends very much on the quality of the materials used, plus the expertise and qualifications of the tradespeople.

  • Is the building company well established? Do they have a successful track record and a solid reputation? Are they adequately insured?
  • Ask about warranties. Required Warranties must include: Statutory 6 year Home Owners Warranty for building work over $12K and the Statutory Home Building Act Warranty for all building work.
  • Ask to see a copy of their license. Consumers who hire unlicensed builders can be themselves liable for on-the-job injuries incurred by an unlicensed builder and their employees.
  • If they offer a 'Total Service', does it include: design and quote, council approvals, construction, quality control, fabrication, logistics and after sales support?
  • Can they offer a wide range of choices and costs … like a selection of architectural plans, sizes and inclusions, rather than a one-size-fits-all basic design?
